Results from 2008 Donor & Member Management Solution Study

This past July and August Campbell Rinker surveyed thousands of people who use software and online tools to manage donors and members. The resulting report highlights one of our deepest studies to date on the awareness, satisfaction, perceptions, preferences, and opinions among people who work in records management, fundraising, mass electronic communication, etc.

Unlike product reviews that you see in magazines and on Web sites, these results are based on actual user feedback. Who best to listen to than those that use the solutions on a daily basis? This article provides some of the most interesting results from the survey. We hope you'll benefit from this unbiased customer feedback.

Online Solutions vs. Installed Software

The study found that online solutions continue to gain popularity. Currently 18% of nonprofits are using an online solution to manage donor and/or member records, compared to only 13% in 2006.  The decline in the use of locally-installed software for managing donor and/or member records has been even more dramatic, shrinking nine percent from 87% in 2006 to 78% in 2008.The gap has closed between the percentages of organizations using online solutions and organizations using locally installed software for mass electronic communication with donors/members. Thirty-nine percent of organizations use an online solution, compared to 37% using installed software.

Products Used

Raiser's Edge is still the most popular product among the random sample of customers polled, with 31% of them using it. DonorPerfect and eTapestry are a distant second and third, with 6% and 5% of customers respectively.

Usage Habits

  • Six in ten users interact daily with the solutions they use to manage and communicate with constituents, while the rest do so less frequently
  • 47% of users would recommend the solution they primarily use, while 27% would not, and 26% are unsure
  • On average, organizations review the solutions they use every five years

2008 Human Services Edition

Campbell Rinker is proud to introduce the publication of the 2008 Human Services edition of our DonorPulse report series.

This report summarizes the findings of our Great American Donor Survey that are relevant to organizations that work domestically on crime & legal issues, civil rights, employment, hunger, safety, housing, disaster relief, community improvement, recreational sports, youth development, public policy, family finance, promotion of science and technology, group homes, or ethnic, senior, and disabled centers.

A total of 3,312 completed surveys were collected. Of the 3,312 responding donors, 1,590 had donated to social/human services type organizations (48%).

A few of the many key findings in this report include…

  • On average, households supporting human/social service charities each donated $363 to them in 2007
  • Donors to human/social service charities prefer to be contacted via postal mail, with 68% of them selecting it as one of their preferred methods (email comes in second, being preferred by 28% of donors)
  • Relatively few human/social service donors have wills, trusts, or estate plans that include charitable giving (11%)
  • In 2007 the slump in housing prices had a negative impact on charitable giving for 32% of households that donate to human/social service charities
  • 36% of donors to human/social service charities are interested in donating to organizations that allow them to play a more active role
